Start with the plumbing set-out

The set-out is the distance from the finished wall to the centre of the floor waste for an S-trap toilet. For a P-trap, the waste exits through the wall. Measure the existing setup or have your plumber confirm it before choosing, because the pan needs to suit the plumbing position.

Back-to-wall, linked or wall-hung

Back-to-wall suites conceal the pipework and sit neatly against the wall, making them easy to clean around. Linked and close-coupled suites can be useful for replacement jobs where the existing plumbing needs more flexibility. Wall-hung pans create the cleanest floor line but require an in-wall cistern and suitable wall framing.

Rimless and tornado flushing

Rimless pans remove the traditional boxed rim, leaving fewer hidden areas for residue to build up. Tornado-style flushing uses a directed swirling action around the bowl. Both are designed around easier cleaning and more complete bowl coverage than older toilet designs.

Standard or raised height

Raised-height toilets make sitting down and standing up easier for taller users, older adults and some accessible bathroom layouts. Standard-height suites suit most households. If comfort is a priority, compare the finished pan height in person rather than relying only on product photos.
