Find Your Fit.

A mirror cabinet is the only bathroom upgrade that adds storage without taking any floor space. You get the mirror you were going to hang anyway, plus shelves behind it for everything that would otherwise sit on the vanity. In a small Adelaide bathroom or an ensuite, that is usually the most useful thing you can fit.

How to Choose a Bathroom Mirror Cabinet

Mirror cabinet or shaving cabinet

The two terms describe the same product. Shaving cabinet is the older Australian name for a mirrored wall cabinet above the basin, and mirror cabinet is what the same thing is usually called now. Either way you are choosing a mirror with storage behind it, so judge it on shelf depth, door style and whether the mirror suits the room.

Surface mounted or recessed

Surface-mounted cabinets sit on the face of the wall and are the straightforward install, which makes them the safe choice for a retrofit. Recessed cabinets sit inside the wall cavity so the mirror finishes almost flush, which looks far neater but needs a stud wall with nothing in the way. Check for pipes, wiring and bracing before you plan a recess, and confirm the cavity depth against the cabinet specification.

LED mirror cabinets and demisters

An LED mirror cabinet gives you storage and even face-height lighting in one unit, which is the biggest practical upgrade you can make above a vanity. Many include a demister pad so the glass stays clear after a shower. Anything hardwired needs a licensed electrician, so decide on the cabinet before the electrical rough-in if you are renovating and have the cable run to the right spot.

Sizing it to the vanity

Keep the cabinet 50mm to 100mm narrower than the vanity on each side, the same rule as a plain mirror, so a 900mm vanity suits a 700mm to 800mm cabinet. Mount the bottom edge 100mm to 150mm above the benchtop so tap splash does not reach it. Also check the door swing, because a hinged door needs clearance that a sliding or push-to-open door does not.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a mirror cabinet and a shaving cabinet?
There is no difference. Shaving cabinet is the traditional Australian name and mirror cabinet is the more common term now. Both describe a mirrored wall cabinet mounted above the basin with storage shelves behind the door.
Should I choose a recessed or surface mounted mirror cabinet?
Surface mounted is simpler and suits most retrofits. Recessed looks neater because the mirror sits almost flush with the wall, but it needs a stud wall with enough cavity depth and no pipes or wiring in the way. Confirm the wall build before planning a recess.
Do LED mirror cabinets need an electrician?
Yes. Any hardwired LED mirror cabinet must be installed by a licensed electrician in Australia. If you are renovating, choose the cabinet before the electrical rough-in so the cable is run to the correct position.
What size mirror cabinet do I need?
Choose one 50mm to 100mm narrower than the vanity on each side. A 900mm vanity suits a 700mm to 800mm cabinet. Mount the bottom edge 100mm to 150mm above the benchtop and allow room for the door to swing.
Can I see mirror cabinets in Adelaide before buying?
Yes. Our Edinburgh showroom has mirror cabinets on display so you can check the shelf depth, door action and LED light quality in person rather than judging from a product photo.
