How to Choose a Bathroom Basin

Above-counter, inset or undermount

Above-counter basins sit on top of the vanity and create the strongest design feature, but they need the tap height and vanity height planned around them. Inset basins sit partly into the benchtop and are practical for everyday use. Undermount basins sit below the surface for a seamless bench that is easy to wipe clean.

Check the basin against the vanity

Measure the usable benchtop, not just the cabinet width. Allow space behind or beside the basin for the mixer, leave enough bench at the front edge, and make sure drawers or internal plumbing will not clash with the waste. A compact basin can be the better choice if storage matters more than bowl size.

Choose the material

Vitreous china is the everyday favourite because it is durable, hygienic and easy to clean. Solid-surface basins offer a softer, more seamless designer finish, while concrete adds texture and variation. The material should suit the amount of use the bathroom gets and the maintenance you are comfortable with.

Match the tapware and waste

A tall mixer usually suits an above-counter basin, while a standard basin mixer works with most inset and undermount setups. Wall-mounted tapware gives you more bench space but needs to be roughed in before tiling. Also check whether the basin has an overflow so you order the correct waste.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of basin is easiest to clean?
Undermount and integrated-style setups are the easiest to wipe around because there is no raised rim sitting on the benchtop. Vitreous china is also very easy to maintain for everyday family bathrooms.
What is the difference between an above-counter and inset basin?
An above-counter basin sits mostly or completely on top of the vanity. An inset basin drops partly into the benchtop, so the overall basin height is lower and the setup usually feels more traditional and practical.
Do I need a tall mixer for an above-counter basin?
Often, yes, if the mixer is mounted on the vanity behind or beside the bowl. The spout needs enough height and reach to clear the basin rim. A wall-mounted mixer is another option if the plumbing is planned before tiling.
What basin materials do you stock?
The current collection includes vitreous china, solid-surface and concrete basins, with products from Fienza and Impressions across above-counter, inset, undermount and wall-hung styles.
Can I see bathroom basins in Adelaide before buying?
Yes. Reno Supplies has an Edinburgh showroom where you can compare basin shapes, sizes and finishes in person and check them against your vanity and tapware plan.
