How to Choose a Bath

Freestanding, back-to-wall or corner

Freestanding baths sit out in the room with all four sides finished and make the biggest statement, but need clear space around them. Back-to-wall baths look freestanding from the front but sit flush against a wall, saving roughly 25% of the floor space and simplifying the plumbing. Corner baths tuck into a corner while still giving a generous soak, which suits compact or L-shaped bathrooms.

Getting the size right

1400mm suits ensuites, second bathrooms and older Adelaide cottages. 1500mm is the most common size and fits most SA main-bathroom alcoves. 1700mm and up gives a full lay-down soak in larger bathrooms. Measure the alcove wall-to-wall, then check your doorways and hallways, because you still have to get the bath into the room.

Materials

Acrylic is the most popular choice: warm to the touch, good at holding heat and light enough for upstairs bathrooms. Solid surface and stone baths are heavier and more luxurious with excellent heat retention, a premium upgrade like the Fienza Sasso. If your bathroom is upstairs, confirm the floor can carry the load, and stick to acrylic unless a builder signs off.

Tapware and installation

Decide early whether you want wall-mounted, deck-mounted or a floor-standing bath filler, since it changes the plumbing. Our Nero bath spouts and mixers pair with everything here. Always use a licensed plumber for the waste and overflow so the install meets Australian standards. We deliver bulky items across metro Adelaide and SA-wide.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best material for a freestanding bath?
For most Australian homes, premium acrylic is the best all-round choice. It is lightweight, holds heat well, is warm to the touch and easy to clean. Solid surface or stone is a premium alternative if the budget allows and the floor can take the weight.
Can I install a bath upstairs?
Yes, if the floor can carry the load. A filled acrylic bath with a bather can weigh over 300kg. Acrylic is the lightest option and generally safe for upper floors in standard Adelaide homes. Stone baths are much heavier, so check with a builder first.
What is the difference between freestanding and back to wall?
A freestanding bath sits in the middle of the room with all four sides finished. A back to wall bath looks the same from the front but sits flush against one wall, saving floor space and simplifying the plumbing.
How much space do I need for a freestanding bath?
Allow at least 100mm clearance on every accessible side. A standard 1500mm bath needs a floor area of roughly 1700mm by 950mm including clearances. Back-to-wall and corner baths reduce that footprint.
Do you deliver baths across South Australia?
Yes. We deliver across metro Adelaide and ship SA-wide. For bulky items like baths, add the product to your cart and enter your address to see delivery options, or visit our Edinburgh showroom to arrange it.
